Breakdown

As a UI/UX designer at Demystifyd, I developed a new ‘Job Hub’ where users can get extensive information on visa processes, company insights, and an AI Job Finder.

I went through multiple iterations specifically on the AI Job Finder, to ensure that the designs were feasible for development. I also consistently communicated with our developers to ensure each step of generating jobs had proper components.

I worked closely with the founder, developers, and marketing team to ensure a smooth launch.

HIGHLIGHTS

CONTEXT

Lack of career support.

Due to the lack of resources to guide immigrants through their visa process and finding a job, my role was to provide curated resources to help support them as much as possible. The first step being understanding this large but nuance user group.

THE PROBLEM

Balancing a range of objectives.

Accessibility of visa sponsored jobs

It’s hard for users to know if a company sponsors visas, thus wasting time on some applications

Standing out as a job board

It’s important to find ways to be unique amongst competitors, whether that be additional features or exceling in one area

Promotion of premium features

Finding ways to encourage users to pay for a premium plan, through ads and curated user experiences

Aligning user needs with business goals to achieve the best possible outcome.

DESIGN PROCESS

The essential features.

I created a site map to set all the features that needed to be included. The goal in mind being organizing the core components.

Low-fidelity prototypes.

Given a pre-existing design system, I knew the general idea of what the new feature should look like to maintain consistency.

During the first review, we went through how a user would go on our platform and explore different features.

Lack of edge cases

Lack of showing the process of some features and error pages

Inconsistent design

The design didn’t fully match the rest of the platform

Poor verbiage

Some of the ads and ways of describing features could be worked on

Making necessary changes.

Step-by-step

I made sure to go step-by-step through each process to ensure a seamless experience for the user

Overhauling design

Revamped the design to ensure a fluid experience throughout the whole platform

Communication

I worked asynchronously with the founder reviewing the right verbiage to better promote the content

I worked closely with our founder to ensure that we didn't miss steps that were essential for a user to understand the workflow of a complex system, the goal was to make it easy for them to use.

Reviewing the feedback.

Extra white space

Too much unused space, certain content could be condensed

Missing navigation

We can’t rely on the ‘back’ feature for users to navigate to different sections

Information hierarchy

It’s hard to digest all the information, especially with so much text

Making more changes.

Condense information

I overhauled the layout of containers to utilize as much space as possible to improve the experience of a new user

Adding entry points

Provided ways to help the user quickly navigate to different sections, without needing lots of extra space

Clear sections

Certain information were similar and could be shown differently, this would improve readability for quick scans

Handling pushback.

Reviewing designs with the founder.

The founder noted that the original method I had for entry points was not clear and suggested that I add a main entry point, more specifically a UI card.

Design misalignment

I found that the designs fit more of a mobile version rather than desktop

Alternative solution

Created a mockup of both solutions and proposed that the alternative was more suitable for desktop

Gaining approval

Founder appreciated that I completed original mockup and showed exploration of best fit design

Rethinking the workflow.

Collaborating with developers.

We had a design meeting to go over the progress of the 'Job Hub' and we stumbled upon a problem where if new jobs were given each day it would cost a lot to run the API every day for every user.

A potential solution.

Since I created a saved jobs section for a general use, it gave us an idea. We could refresh the jobs given to users without running the API again, we just needed to generate an extensive list of jobs and give the user a fixed number a day from that list.

Mobile development.

Overhauling the mobile version.

After going through multiple rounds of iterations, I began to create the mobile version.

Mobile accessibility

The designs had to change in terms of layout and functions due to how a user interacts on a phone

Content priority

Focus on essential content, displaying the most important information first

Limited space

Smaller screens means to ensure content is readable without excessive zooming

FINAL DESIGNS

Refining the look.

I designed the ‘Job Hub’ on Demystifyd to support foreign nationals and immigrants in their careers. Curated resources are presented to users in a digestible way to ensure a seamless experience.

Rewards are given to people when sharing experiences with others, we want to encourage spreading knowledge

Tailored job opportunities

Based on a resume input, jobs with a high match are given to the user on a daily basis

Clear directions

The instructions on how to use our tool is outlined in three simple steps

Personalized responses are generated by AI and a search query is used to find potential hiring contacts

CONCLUSION

Successful design hand-off.

Through many hours of designing and meetings, the team and I were able to successfully develop the new feature by our deadline. The feedback was essential to ensure that design was ready for users.

It was a long but rewarding process on developing a new feature, and I gained valuable insights into designing for a niche user group. I really enjoyed working with the developers to see how the back-end came together and what information they would need from a user, that led me to think differently when designing for AI.
